MCA proposes renaming Toi Market after Raila Odinga

In a desperate attempt to save Toi Market, County Assembly Leader of Majority Peter Imwatok is proposing the market be renamed after Raila Odinga.

According to Imwatok, this will scare away would-be arsonists. "We are planning to bring another motion to change Toi Market into Raila Odinga market so that we can safeguard the legacy of this market through a legend,” he said.

“Maybe if the name will be changed the arsonist will fear, it is not the first time that it is being razed down. We suspect it is by design by a few individuals who think they have title deeds,” the politician explained.

Previously, the County Assembly approved a motion that sought to tame frequent infernos in markets.

Peter Imwatok, who is behind the motion, had told the Assembly that the frequency of attacks targeting markets in informal settlements is suspected to be through human malicious acts.

The Makongeni MCA says public participation will be carried out around the area before the proposal is tabled in Assembly.
